The town shot to fame because of a small community comprising about 250-300 people. It earned global recognition as most of its residents call this 14-storey building their home. For curious travellers, Whittier is a hidden gem. The place offers travellers an insight into the lifestyle shaped by tough geography, icy weather and golden history.
While there are some residents who live in nearby structures, the majority live in Begich Towers, making it a landmark town. The tower was built in the 1950s by the U.S. military as the Hodge Building but today, it houses residences, grocery store, post office, laundromat, health centre and other regular conveniences.
