Pakistan’s security situation deteriorated further on Monday after six members of the Frontier Constabulary (FCN) were killed and four others injured while repelling a terrorist assault on a security post in the Hassan Khel area of Peshawar, according to sources cited by Dawn.The attackers reportedly attempted to seize the post, triggering a fierce gun battle. Sources told Dawn that the assault was ultimately foiled, with eight terrorists killed in the retaliatory operation. However, the violence came at a heavy cost, with six FCN personnel losing their lives. Three security personnel were also reported to have been taken hostage by the attackers. Security forces later rushed to the area and established a cordon as operations continued.The attack comes weeks after BLA forces targeted a train in Pakistan’s Quetta region, killing over 20 people including security personnel.The attack adds to growing instability across Pakistan, which is already grappling with escalating unrest in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). Tensions have intensified following deadly clashes between protesters and Pakistani security forces, prompting widespread shutdowns and reports of a communications blackout in several areas.Anti-government demonstrations have spread across cities including Rawalakot, Muzaffarabad, Bhimbar and Kotli, with hundreds of people taking to the streets. According to reports, at least seven civilians were killed during clashes on Sunday night, further fuelling anger against the authorities.The situation has also attracted international attention. More than 50 British parliamentarians have written to UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper expressing concern over reports of communication restrictions, arrests and the deteriorating security environment in PoJK. The lawmakers said they had been approached by British Kashmiris unable to contact relatives in the region and warned that restrictions on communication risk deepening tensions.The latest terrorist attack in Peshawar, coupled with ongoing unrest in PoJK, has underlined the multiple security and political challenges confronting Pakistan as violence and public anger continue to mount in different parts of the country.
