Four-time Stanley Cup champion Claude Lemieux passed away on May 28, 2026, at the age of 60, leaving behind a hockey world in shock and a family that meant everything to him. Behind the NHL’s most notorious agitator was a deeply private man who was devoted to his wife, his four children, and a family legacy that now spans three generations of professional hockey.
Who is Claude Lemieux’s wife, Deborah Lemieux ?
Deborah Lemieux is originally from Boone, North Carolina, and the family maintained a house there throughout Claude’s career. The two met during Claude’s time with the New Jersey Devils in the mid-1990s. Claude had already been married once before and had two children, but when he met Deborah, his teammates described him as sweet and easygoing, a side of him fans rarely saw on the ice. Deborah has remained entirely out of the public spotlight throughout their marriage, a deliberate choice that Claude always respected. The NHL Alumni Association specifically asked everyone to respect the family’s privacy following Claude’s death, noting he was deeply loved by his wife and four children.
Claude Lemieux’s four children: Brendan, Claudia, Christopher and Michael
Claude had four children from two marriages. From his first marriage, he has two sons- Christopher, born in 1989, and Michael, born in 1992, both of whom live in Montreal. With Deborah, he had a son, Brendan, born in 1996, and a daughter, Claudia, born in 1997. Brendan is by far the most well-known of the four. He followed his father into professional hockey, getting drafted 31st overall by the Buffalo Sabres in 2014 and going on to play for the Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers, and Carolina Hurricanes before moving to HC Davos in Switzerland. The family resemblance went beyond the ice. Brendan was suspended for five games in 2021 for biting Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk, a moment that immediately drew comparisons to his father’s own infamous biting incident during his playing days. The pest gene, it seems, is hereditary.
The Lemieux hockey family runs deep
Claude’s younger brother, Jocelyn Lemieux, who also had a lengthy NHL career, playing 597 games across seven teams, including the Canadiens, Blackhawks, and Devils. The brothers grew up close, playing hockey together on the street and on the outdoor rink behind their elementary school in Mont-Laurier, Quebec. Claude reportedly wore three pairs of socks just to fit into his secondhand skates. There was also a third brother, Serge, who had to be institutionalized due to cerebral palsy, a reality Claude spoke about openly, saying it made him and Jocelyn deeply aware of how fortunate they were.Claude is survived by his brother Jocelyn, his wife Deborah, and his four children: Brendan, Claudia, Michael, and Christopher. A hockey family, through and through.
